I really liked this camera. I went for a trip and the pictures was the best thing I collected. Tottaly recommended!
Canon Powershot D10
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Camera was everything I wanted. Pictute and video quality are excellent. Very easy to use. Easy to use all the common functions. Had the camera in the water for at least two hours at a time with no leaks (pushed all the buttons underwater with no problems). Battery time very acceptable, could possibly be seen as short (on avarage two days) but the camera has a large view screen. So get a couple of extra batteries to keep charged they are quick charging and not expensive. Get this camera and you won’t regret it.
Great all around point and shoot
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this unit to take with me on a snorkeling trip to Mexico. It works very well and I only wish it shot in RAW so that I can adjust the white balance afterward. Other than that it performs very well. Underwater photography is tricky, but this camera gives one anything needed to take a shot as well as movies. Very reasonable pricing for a point and shoot that is waterproof and shock resistant. I normally shoot with a 1D Mark III and an underwater housing for the camera cost more than the camera body!
Great Underwater Camera
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Based on some reviews, we tested this camera before leaving for our honeymoon by submerging in water in the sink for several hours and taking several pictures. We repeated this twice and it worked fine. We took this camera to Australia and New Zealand and tried it in many different situations: Bondi Beach (Sydney), underwater snorkling in Great Barrier Reef, rain and beach on Kangaroo Island, Apollo Beach, rain and ice at Franz Josef glacier, beach at Wanaka lake and Lake Tekapo, white water rafting in Rangitata Gorge (Peel Forrest) etc. It worked great in every setting. The pictures it took underwater (once I put it in underwater mode) were phenomenal. Great colors and even handled lots of moving fish (and my shaky hand). Worked great out of water too. At 12.1 MP it just took great shots that we’ve become accustomed to with Canon cameras. Battery lasted longer than expected and as easy to use as our other Canon P&S.
Only con I would say is that the form factor is a little bulky and unattractive, but I quickly got over that. Also, the wrist strap, while secure, was a pain when trying to insert and remove from protective case. Sometimes I would switch which corner it was on to make it easier to remove but then it would be awkward taking pictures. Mildly annoying but really not that bad.
We have 3 other Canon cameras and they have all performed admirably and this is just another example of a great Canon product.
diappointing image quality
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I gave this camera as a gift (I have a Rebel XSi and SD850), and I’ve been generally disappointed by the quality of indoor pictures, taken with flash or without. The pictures come out very soft, with halos around brighter objects, and appear very lifeless and flat. My expectation was to see quality comparable to the SD series (digital elph), but unfortunately, the IQ of D10 is much worse.
Good Outdoors…beware indoors in some lighting situations
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I have a number of canon cameras [SD 550, SD 750, original Digital Rebel (300D), Rebel XSI] and purchased the D10 to take on vacations to beach, water parks etc. I received the camera in early November 2009 and pictures taken outdoors look great. The IS works well and I took a number of good pictures of our new puppy and my young kids (all of which have a tendency to move…darn it!) and pictures look good. Based on reviews here the camera went into the water in the sink almost right away to test the seals as others (from the number of postings this is rare) have had leaks that bricked their cameras. I had no problems there.
What I did / do have a problem with is that with some types of fluorescent lighting (that in my kitchen, as it turns out) the pictures have an extremely yellow cast. Selecting white balance for fluorescent lighting did help some but problem seemed to return after several shots even still in that mode. Selecting over to that mode was also quite cumbersome and not something I wanted to do every time I happened to take a picture in my kitchen (which is where our puppy spends quite a bit of time, of course). Oddly, my older cameras noted above all deal with this lighting with automatic settings without problems.
The issue was so severe that I actually returned the first camera I got in case it was an issue just with that unit. As it turns out, it appears to be design related. Oh well, I’ll simply be sure to use a different camera in the kitchen – but if you intend to use this as not only an occasional camera but your primary camera you may wish to think twice or at least very carefully test it in all lighting conditions in and around your home. Incidentally, this was my first return to Amazon and true to their reputation it could not have been easier. I will keep the replacement camera as it should work well for outdoors / beach / water parks etc. I had hoped to use it as a extra fairly small camera for indoor shots but I no longer plan to use it that way.
As a side note, if you get this be sure to re-assign the “printer” button to switch to movie mode if you use it for video – the instructions for doing this are buried in the book but this is MUCH easier than selecting mode button, clicking right twice and hitting set.
Great Camera….Great Price
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I’ve just had this camera for about 1 month and so far, so good. No problems, easy to use & excellent picture quality !!!!!
Worked great till it died.
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I looked all over for a good camera I could take paddleboarding and not worry about it getting wet if I fell in. Got some great pics the first two trips, but it died on the 3rd. Must be something with the seals on the camera. I was extra careful when opening and closing the hatches but it looks like water got in there. The door seals didn’t ever quite feel 100% closed to me, so I’m guessing that’s where the water got in.
Canon has always had great customer service, so other than the pain of returning it, it’s no biggie.
I think I’d go with one of those hard plastic housings for my older point n shoot instead. Those things never leak, but are a bit bulkier and UGLY.
Very pleased with my purchase
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Initially I was hesitant to purchase this camera because of the bad reviews on the shape and size of the camera. I have to say I’m glad I went ahead and purchased it. By far, it has the best features compared to all other waterproof cameras. I’m not in love with the shape of the camera (it’s submarine looking)however, I can’t commplain when it comes to the functionalities and features. Overall, I am happy with this product. I bought it specifically for my trip to Jamaica and I was quite pleased with its performance. I would however recommend that you buy one of those plastic covers to protect the screen. I already scratched mine =(.
easy to use
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
have had several other canons so I felt quite comfortable picking up this camera and starting to use it. A little bulky for my pocket but really not bad as the last camera I had was just as big (had bigger camera to get larger zoom). I love not having to feel like I have to keep this camera wrapped in foam in my purse- I am rough on things and that is why I got this camera, and so far I love it though really haven’t had it that long.
fisherprice enters the waterproof camera scene
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Felt like a beer can in my pocket and looked like fisher price designed this camera for a 3yr old.Sorry folks, this is not ergonomically designed is any way shape or form. Images were mediocre at best. Actual use was very simple because… IT HAS NO FEATURES! Point and hope at its best. Like a relic from a time capsule when compared to most other cameras on the market. But in all fairness, sometimes simple people need simple cameras. And rather than cursing the darkness, I’ll light a flame, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 is amazing.
Point and Shoot Underwater camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Great point and shoot digital camera. Takes nice underwater photos. Takes nice dry land photos.
The accessory pack is a great addition. You get a nice rubber (think wet suit material) case and a bit assortment of lanyards that you can use to attach the camera to your body or other equipment. The lanyards are great for snorkeling, hiking and skiing.
My only complaint is with battery life. It is a little short. I got about 100 shots on the first few charges.
We were the envy of our scuba and snorkel trip with this camera!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Prior to buying this, I was considering the waterproof housing for my Powershot S880 IS for a trip to Hawaii. I really like my 880 IS. And despite the great reviews for the housing, you have to admit that it’s a $150 piece of plastic that does only 1 thing. For some more money, I thought it made more sense to have a waterproof camera that also could serve as a backup.
Took a few test shots just to get used to the settings and the camera, and they turned out fine. The real test was the manta ray scuba dive, and my wife took it down to 35 or 36 feet, which is 10% more than the recommended 33 feet. It kind of made me nervous as I heard her say she went that low, but those Canon engineers clearly know what they are doing. The camera worked like a champ! After setting it to underwater mode, the pictures (plus sound!) came out beautifully! The other people on our dive boat were amazed and asked if we would share the still pictures and videos with them. We quickly became the envy of the dive. I also took it to Kealakekua Bay, watching dolphins and tropical fish in the bright sunlight (but underwater) and once again, the results were fantastic. You can zoom in/out while you take video with this camera, and I know some cameras do not allow that. If the camera suspects someone may have blinked during the shot, it will display a small icon as you review the picture. I found this feature surprisingly accurate. The camera will turn the LCD screen on in playback mode, if you press and hold the play button. (Other Canon cameras probably do this, but I discovered this by just playing around with the D10 one day.)
What’s also great about this camera is that it’s good for everyday use. The D10 has auto vs. program modes as well as the usual special ones like portrait, sunset, indoor, etc. and it’s a 12 MP camera! (My 880 IS is only 10 MP.) The macro function also worked very nicely as I strolled around one of the botanical gardens in Hilo, taking good close-ups of the flowers. The strap has a unique feature where you can move and replace it at any of the 4 corners of the camera.
Buy a big memory card if you want to take this underwater, because you’ll want to mix the still pictures with video and we quickly started to run out of room. The minimum I would recommend is 4G. Also, it was hard to find a good camera case because this camera’s lens does not collapse flat. It’s got 1 shape (which I totally understand since it needs to stay sealed.) I took the camera to different stores just to make sure it would fit, and ended up with a basic one that I purchased from Target, but about 80% of the camera cases could NOT fit this camera, so be careful on this part.
Otherwise, I consider this money extremely well spent and hope you will, too. I feel bad about the person whose camera leaked… Hopefully just a model with a small defect. Mine worked great!
It works!

I got this camera for a snorkeling trip in Palawan, Philippines. The underwater shots were great and it was so easy to use. At first I was worried that it might be leaking because I was seeing some small bubbles coming from the camera but everything was okay.
Leaked after first use…
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Probably I was unlucky to get a bad unit but my D10 leaked the first time I took it underwater. I went no more than 4-5 feet under to get my first underwater shot and noticed that LCD screen was blank, so I took it out of the water right away and it was full of water! All compartments were closed properly (as far as I could tell). Must be a bad seal somewhere.
Excellent Waterproof Camera

lost in the sea
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Don’t buy any waterproof camera until they figure out how to make it float. Had camera for a couple months now and it’s somewhere on the reef. Lost in mild 1-3 surf while taking action shots.Had that poorly manufactured Olympus floating strap on when plastic clip clipped off in wave. Lost camera , all pictures and out $270……wasn’t even able to view pics on computer to give accurate rating….
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is looking for an all around great camera.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We are on our third day of vacation in Cancun, Mexico. After the kids used the camera almost all day for the last three days, we just had to switch to a new battery. Three days of fun and no worries about the battery being low. Picture quality is fantastic even using the 3x zoom. Underwater photos came out great! Kids are having a blast with it. Using the camera on the bumpy ride in a golf cart to the beach, not one photo came out blurry. Shake proof really works! After a last minute decision to purchase, we definitely don’t regret spending the money. This is an all around awesome camera. To everyone who is looking for a good camera, you’ve found it.
Best of the waterproof point and shoot cameras
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Canon D10 has a view screen that works in bright daylight conditions. This allows the photographer to compose a picture. The canon d10 camera takes the best images of the three waterproof cameras that I own. The pentax and olympus waterproof cameras take acceptable images but their view screens are not bright enough for use in bright daylight conditions. I will be selling the pentax and olympia waterproof cameras. If you take water shots or ski shots, I recommend the Canon D10.
Great Camera!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I really like the Canon PowerShot D10. It works great! I wish the battery life could be a little better, but I guess I will just have to carry extra batteries with me. I plan on taking it with me to Burning Man in 2010!
It might be water proof… but don’t use it for anything else.
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
So this may or may be a good underwater camera… if that is all you are going to use it for then disregard this review. I didn’t take enough underwater pictures to give it a fair shake at that. I did use it for a weekend and it fails badly as a general point and shoot camera. The picture quality was awful and not at all up to what I expect from a cannon (my previous camera was a powershot A620, and I ended up buying a PowerShot SX20 after returning this). I really like cannon products and maybe this is a good rough and tumble camera, but you will have to take time to line up every shot and make sure your lighting is great… otherwise… the picture wont be worth the effort.
Love The Canon Powershot D10
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This, so far, is one of my favorite cameras. I bought it for vacation and it took great pics both inside and outside, in light and in dark. I love the camera. It’s also easy to use and its almost impossible to take a bad picture with it.
Fantastic Camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought camera for trip to Jamaica. OMG what a pleasent surprise. Pictures are crisp, color is vivid, can’t say enough good things. It’s great to just rinse off the sand or salt water. Even dropped it once.
Underwater pictures are great, would compare my pictures with a high end camera anytime. Video both underwater and topside are super.
While on trip people all around were asking what kind of camera I had. I believe there are at least 8-10 new D10 owners now.
The camera is simple to operate, even my wife who is a point and shoot type person used it with ease.
If you want a camera you can take to the beach, pool or any adverse condition this camera is great. I would recommend buying a 16GB chip which would give about 2hrs+video and more pictures than you can take in a day.
The best waterproof camera. Period!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve had Canon cameras for years so I couldn’t wait to try this camera underwater. Living in Costa Rica, I am always doing extreme action sports and thanks to this camera I have been able to capture great pictures.
I did a 2 week research on waterproof cameras before purchasing my D10. Overall there are about 14 different styles out there, some are lighter yet you can only go about 4ft. The D10 provides up to 33ft, so you can take it scuba diving, snorkeling or surfing.
All digital cameras should be waterproof because you want a camera that you can take anywhere without worrying about spills, dirt, dust, freeze, or even dropping it (shock proof up to 4ft). Is not like you are taking pictures in baby showers and home parties all the time.
The 12MP are great, the image quality underwater is beyond comparison. It also has nice features such as auto focus, face detection, and blink detection.
Overall, other that its bulky size, I give it a 10+

A real “Bring it everywhere” camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
With this camera, I am not afraid of getting wet, or being mishandled by my son. I bring it everywhere I go to capture some pictures that I had never done before:
Water slides, Swimming pool, Snorkelling, Water theme parks….
GREAT
I like it
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I haven’t used it much, but I like it. Some folks have complained about the size. I didn’t have a problem with it. I noticed that the fill flash is a joke, coming from DSLR’s where I use it a lot. Also I was a little dissapointed in the battery life. I am replacing an old Casio Exlim 750 on which the battery hardley ever went dead. In just a few hours of shooting, about 60 photos, the battery indicator was showing one tick off of full. I have found that the battery indicators are usually not very accurate. I usually change the battery shortly after I see it starting to go down. Maybe this one is better. It did continue to shoot.
It is pretty quick on start up and shutter lag.
I am not familier with the Canon menu system (Nikon guy), but I got the hang it pretty quickly.
I would love to have the accessory lanyard kit, but $99 COME ON!
Overall I like it and will use it in circumstances where my DSLR is not appropriate.
Camera lasted almost 4 days, then leaked.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased my Canon D10 while on vacation in Maui. I am a diehard Canon fan, and was initially thrilled with this camera. I used it underwater while snorkeling, on the beach shooting waves, on dry land, and then that was it. It stopped working the third time I took it in the water. Each time I took the camera out of the water, I followed the instructions carefully, soaking it in fresh water, and then making sure that it was completely dry before opening the battery/memory card compartment and the USB compartment. After the camera stopped working, the two compartments were dry, which leads me to believe that water leaked in elsewhere. I can see water on the inside lens, and fogging on the LCD screen. I am very disappointed as I would have liked to use this camera during the last few days of my vacation. Thank goodness I have another camera with me, although I won’t be able to take any more photos in the water! I rated this item with one star as it should have lasted much longer than 4 days. I’ll update this after I see how Canon responds and how the camera works after it has been replaced/repaired. By the way, amazon.com was great – I received the camera when promised. Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD
Update: I live in Canada, but purchased the camera in the USA. The packaging stated that the warranty was good only in the country of purchase. When I contacted Canon Canada by email to ask if they would repair my camera under warranty, they gave me a wishy washy answer. I decided not to take my chances and returned my camera for a full refund just before I left Maui. Canon lost my business. Kudos to amazon.com for their smooth return process!
Wow! Love this camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We bought one after I took pictures with the Canon and two competitors at a photo store, uploaded the pictures, and compared them side by side. When I asked the photographer and other customers which images they liked better, hands down the canon image quality was the best. After using the camera for a few days, I ordered a second for my wife. She is now using the camera more frequently than she uses her Rebel. We bought both for a family cruise, and ended up buying a third so we could take pictures underwater, and video throughout the cruise. Pictures are terrific, and the video easily downloaded to the MAC, so I had the movie done on the plane ride home. This is a terrific camera if you want memories of your family vacations, snapshots of various events, and basically want pictures of real life. It does not replace my D300, but I do carry it with me in my briefcase, just in case I run across that terrific scene, or want to capture the image of a whiteboard, or run across some other memory making event. Waterproof, drop proof, rugged – the perfect camera for on the go.
Great camera for action & adventure, not so much for daily life.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
If you get into the water at the beach, snorkel, ski, snowboard, participate in other cold weather activities, or if you just tend to drop things, this is a good camera and does what it was intended, and does it well. However, if you’re looking for a camera that slips into your pocket, takes great party photos, family snap shots, or other less than arduous activities, reconsider buying this camera.
This camera takes good photos in moderate to extreme conditions; after all, it is a Canon. It will not take wide-angle photos and its standard telephoto is limited to 3x. Since the lens is tucked inside a durable housing, that limits what the lens can do. The settings are somewhat limited, but that is anticipated in a point-and-shoot camera. Raw images would have been nice and a little more manual control is always nice. However, it is a point-and-shoot for a reason. Anyway, who wants to be running out of oxygen underwater while trying to find the perfect manual setting.
I really like the way I can attach the lanyard to each of the four corners, the strong flash, and general build quality.
What it does poorly is fit into your pocket. For a small camera, it is bulky. The best description I can think of is take a great Canon PowerShot and stuff it into an underwater housing. That extra bulk is needed so the camera can perform in the moderate to extreme conditions.
If you’re looking for a small camera for everyday use that takes great photos during our usual mundane lives, look hard at other small cameras that provide equal or better functionality and takes equal or better photos for the same or lower price.
Very Pleased
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera because I live in Palau where there is beautiful snorkeling. I wanted a camera that did well on land as well as underwater, and I didn’t want to deal with an underwater housing. I looked at a lot of other cameras before deciding that this one seemed worth the price. I have not been disappointed.
Some reviewers complained that it was a little slow and that it didn’t shoot in RAW. It’s important to remember that this is a point and shoot. If you are wanting the quality of an SLR for underwater, be prepared to spend a LOT more money for an SLR housing. For a point and shoot, this is an excellent camera, both underwater and on land. My husband and I both have Canon SLRs and were very impressed with the clarity of our underwater shots with this camera.
It is a little bulkier than I was wanting, but it also feels very sturdy. I really feel that I can take it anywhere without worrying about it. It has fallen off a table, and passed the shock proof test. There is no lens cover, but the lens is protected and does not scratch.
The battery life is nothing to brag about. I would recommend a spare battery, as well as a float strap if you plan to have it anywhere near deep water.
Overall, I have been pleased with this camera and would recommend it to anyone looking for good land and water shots.
Fantastic waterproof camera for vacation and shoots good photos out of water, too!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I got this camera just a few days before our trip to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, so I didn’t have much time to test it out before we left. It took good pictures around town while in Sydney plus it was easy to carry and portable. I used it constantly for the 3 1/2 weeks of our trip and love the camera so far.
I originally looked into getting a waterproof housing for my Canon Powershot, but couldn’t find one exactly right and they were very expensive. We were just going to do some snorkeling, not diving, so didn’t need something for deep underwater. I liked the D10 because it was rated for 10 meters instead of 3 so you could feel safe swimming down to things well below the surface without worry if you are too deep.
Once we got to the reef, just jumped in and started taking pictures. The screen was bright and easy to see under the water. I was careful to turn it off between shots if I wasn’t constantly snapping away, so we never had any problems with the battery life. (I saw this on a few reviews before my purchase, so I was careful.) It has such a quick start time that I never felt that I was going to miss something. I also turned off the picture review to save the battery. This also allowed me to take my next photo much quicker since you didn’t have to wait for the review before the camera went back to “live”. The pictures were fantastic, I uploaded a few to the customer picture gallery. I couldn’t have been happier with the photos and beats those disposable cameras, hands down!
Once you get out of the ocean, very important to soak or thoroughly rinse the camera to remove the salt. Our boat had a fresh water bin to soak/rinse the cameras as you got out of the ocean. Also be sure to let completely dry (and may want to use a puff blower over the battery cover as water likes to stay in some small spots there) before you open the battery cover or usb cover. I also took the extra precaution to blow off (with the puff blower like you use for your digital SLR) the edges of the seals of each compartment before closing them to ensure no dust or sand might be hiding there. No sense in taking a risk like that.
Changing between the scene modes was very easy, but usually not necessary. When shooting sunset or evening photos, the camera would automatically change to sunset mode for you and enrich those great colors. I also used the aquarium mode, which was a nice option since it changed the light balance and ensured no flash to ruin your photos. Mostly I left it on Auto and let the camera do all of the work. You don’t need to think about anything, just shoot away and let it take great photos for you.
I accidentally tested the shockproof feature of the camera one day. I hadn’t put the strap on my wrist and was carrying some other things in my hand. I dropped the camera from about shoulder height to the cement with no damage and only a small scratch!
One small drawback is the small optical zoom. I understand it, especially since the lens can’t extend but it would have been nice at times to have a more closeup shot. With 12MP, I feel I can crop the photos a bit when necessary without too much worry since I mostly post them to the web. There is still plenty of resolution left. (My Nikon D70 SLR is only 6MP.)
Overall, I’m very impressed with this camera. It was very easy to use, feels sturdy (and survived a 4 foot drop), and takes great photos both underwater and otherwise (especially love many of the sunset photos).

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RMWQUP8SZDMLS I purchased this camera based on all the excellent reviews, I”ve read on Cnet and Amazon……..I think this is a wonderful camera for my upcoming cruise vacation…………..as my Nikon D300………will not work for snorkeling……..and going to the beach………..while this very atractive pint sized performer………will fill the bill……..I find you have to make sure that the battery hatch cover is closed tightly and properly……..it kind of makes a woosh noise……..when closed properly……I have taken some test fotos……….and I must say that once you set the menu up………..such as setting you pictures on the vivid mode for a little extra color pop……..its.very ,very nice..and lets not forget that this camera is a 12.1 megapixel……..with the Canon Advanced Digic processor………Anyway I will report back when I return from my cruise vacation..and post some of the pictures and videos I will take….so far I think this is a teriffic performer.and I highly reccomend it…………Well I have returned from my cruise vacation……..the Canon D 10 performed flawlessly……I shot
beautiful fotos as well as excellent Underwater video in the Caribbean Sea……..at Sting Ray City………One thing I Would Reccomend is once your done shooting in salt water.Soak the d 10 in a sink of Fresh Water.for about 30 min. to clean the camera and remove any salt residue…………..to prevent the salt water from harming the seals on the camera
very good photo quality- but not waterproof
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
After one day being under the water- the next day the camera shuts off after a little while and says to change battery pack! The battery was full and it constantly did that after one day! The photo quality is unbelievable and it’s really not as bulky as a powershot g7. But for the price of the camera- I expect it to last past one day.
Problems with “Lens Error”
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I wish I didn’t have to write a negative review about this camera. As a die-hard Canon fan with 3 EOS digital SLRs and numerous L lenses in his case, I was initially confident that the D10 would be a significant step-up from my prior underwater system comprising a rock-solid Powershot S45 and Canon underwater-case. I was looking for a less bulky alternative, and the D10 appeared to suit the bill.
I love the ease-of-use camera software that Canon has left alone in its various iterations of Powershot series, and the online reviews of this D10 put it at the top-of-the-pack in numerous tests versus other current manufacturer competitors.
I’ve had the camera for just two months, and up until recently it’s given pretty good pictures. Even underwater, when using the underwater white-balance setting, and with a little post-processing, the pictures turn out good. The flash throws pretty well underwater, and I’ve seen no sign of water entry – the seals seem to be well designed. The resolution should give some decent sized prints – I typically print out 17″x22″ prints at home from my SLRs.
Ok, so last week when reviewing some pictures, the camera suddenly fails to start-up, with a warning on the LCD screen saying “Lens Error – restart camera”; a couple of beeps and flashes from the green LED and off it turns. I check it with several freshly-charged batteries and no luck. I put in a new SD card, as if that’ll help, but no difference. The problem is with the camera.
I’ve now searched online for this error message, and it appears I’m not alone with this problem. Several people are thinking it’s a design flaw with the D10.
And ironically, last night, the camera suddenly started working again. But then today it’s stopped again. So now I’ve got something worse than a faulty camera – I’ve got a sporadically faulty camera.
As I say, if you do buy this camera, just ensure you keep the receipt and all the packaging – you may have to avail yourself of the limited warranty, as I’m going to have to do, today. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that you have a reliable model and if so, you’ll have a super little camera.
Update (Nov 10, 2009):
Camera is currently with Canon. The service department so far has been very good and courteous. They have agreed that it is a warranty-worthy repair and that it should take 7-10 business days to complete. I’ll provide an update upon completion of this.
Best waterproof point and shoot!
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Prior to buying this product I had purchased the Olympus waterproof and had 1 fail within a week, then with my 2nd realized how poor the picture quality was,.,, having owned a canon before I knew of the superb picture quality and ease of use so I am very glad that the same quality was maintained in this waterproof product! Picture quality is great, awesome zoom, and this camera is very durable! I have taken it diving and it works great underwater and the pics turn out great too! I love the feature of being able to easily move the wrist strap for convenience!
On another note: I have had 2 issues, once I was having a “memory card error” message intermittently when I would power the camera on, but removing the card and reinserting it would fix the problem for a picture or 2.. this problem only occurred a
few times in 1 day and not again since!
Another time I was having a boot failure message, which again only happened a couple times!
Perfect Camera for a Snowball Fight
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
A well equipped, experience and talented photographer in our hiking group researched and selected the D 10 after many in our group experience camera mishaps on the trail due to rough handling and wet weather. Following many weeks of satisfactory performance and exceptional photos by our friend, we purchased the D 10. We find it ideal for not only spectacular mountainscapes, but for kayaking and family photos as well. Based on our experience, two more people in our ten-person hiking group are planning to purchase it soon. Maybe the D 10 will eventually get a sweep. Canon should make the D 10 in more colors so the happy hikers can tell them apart. It is the perfect camera for a snowball fight.
AMAZING.

I’ve been wanting a waterproof dig camera for a while but the depth limits of most (typically 10′) turned me off. Along comes the Canon D10. The fact that it can go down to depths of 30′ got me interested…then I read several online reviews and comparisons and this camera always ended up rated great, so i picked one up before heading to a trip to Jamaica.
Its AWESOME.
I had this camera with me regardless of the setting: swimming in the ocean, pool, waterfall, wherever and whenever. Its controlls are easy. Its settings are powerful. Its picture and video quality is phenom.
Tips:
- Use the preset settings function (IE: “sunset” or “underwater”, etc).
Canon really tweaks the settings to give you the best pictures under the defined conditions.
- Read the manual. This camera has some powerful features that are easy to miss.
Ive owned a G9 for years but never took the time to learn the special features it could do such as isolate a single color and display all else as black and white.
With this camera i read the manual from front to back on the flight and am glad i did. Trust me, its worth your time to do this. dont just use it as point and shoot in Auto. You’ll love what you can do.
- The accessories kit. Its certainly ridiculously overpriced, however the accessories cables are handy. I used the long cable as an over the shoulder strap for snorkling. It easily zips tight when swimming and loosens for easy shots
and video without ever worring about dropping the camera. I used the caribeaner cable for walking thru waterfalls or leaning over boats sides so that even if i dropped the camera, it’d still be attached to me. Worth it if you will take the camera on more action based situations.
The canon D10 will run you a little bit more than the other underwaters in its class but you will be happy you spent it. Its awesome.
Great ruggedness and, well, it’s a Canon

We were getting ready to go on a cruise, and this had just hit the market. I loved the idea of an underwater camera, but was hesitant as I was not impressed by the picture quality of others I had seen (Olympus). The d10, far exceeded my expectations. Yes, it is a bit bulky, and the controls require a bit of re-learning, but the pictures are phenomenal. Underwater and above-water, the images are sharp. It takes better quality images than my old Canon s500, and absolutely takes better images than my wife’s Casio and Nikon.
If you are looking for a portable, easy to use camera, find another Canon. But if you like being outdoors and capturing the experience, this camera it the way to go!!
Great camera for those getting those creative shots.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This camera was an improvement on my Olympus 770 WS. I found the shutter delay and start up to be quite slow. I missed a lot of shots. I thought the Canon D10 was a great camera but not perfect and of course being the photo fanatic I am I carry it everywhere. I had a chance to test some features such as the waterproof, freeze-proof and shock proof but it was protected in the case. I operated well at 26 degrees Centigrade with the snow and ice. There were no camera problems after a protected light fall. Also it continue to operate after getting wet from the rain and the snow. It has fast start up and a short shutter delay which enables you to get those quick shots. The time between or delay between shots could be improved. I found it difficult at times to catch action shots or movement from animals without some blur but I think I need to work with the camera a little more or ask the dogs to stop and pose for me. I did some outdoor landscape shots and was pleasantly surprised. If you want action photography we are talking about using an SLR for best performance with a quick lens. If you want a shorter delay between pictures and when actuating your shutter you also need an SLR. Also the camera had a high ISO of 3200 which really helped with those low light shots and made the photograph look brighter in darker conditions. Of course the only drawback was the noise or a grainier look.. In regards to the accessory kit I could only use two of the included items and they were the camera case and the neck strap. The attachments for the wrist strap and the neck strap were a little too proprietary for me. I would have liked an attachment adapter so that you could attach another type of neck strap. The case worked well but I would have liked a place for extra media and battery. The neck strap was a little awkward and I had a little difficulty in getting to lie flat on my chest but it did work and was waterproof. The next strap and wrist attachment to the cameras’ four ports was secure, reliable, and was without fault. Overall it is a great back up, hiking and/or outdoor activity camera which does water like snorkeling. I think the accessory kit should have been divided up so that you can buy the camera case and neck strap separately.
great underwater camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We purchased the camera for underwater shots in the Galapagos Islands. It took excellent photos and became our “go to” camera while we were snorkeling and kayaking as well as being very nice to have on the beach. Took excellent photos under water without flash (though there is an internal one) and underwater focus was excellent. We recharged every night but did not have any problem with battery life after using it all day to take both photos and video. The 3X zoom was sufficient for all of our photo requirements. There is also digital zoom but we did not use that often. This was in roughly 30 ft of water. The camera has simple, easy to understand and easy to master controls. Some of the other settings that you might be used to on “Cannon land cameras” such as changing the ISO are a little more challenging. Since those all run through the menu on the back rather than a button on the camera, some prior consideration of shooting conditions rather than changing “in the heat of battle” is the way to go, but still it was not a problem. The display on the back is large, bright and easy to use both in and out of the water. There is a short learning curve mastering the framing photos while swimming. The camera does not float but we got a small clip from home depot to clip the wrist strap to our vest and had no issues. Overall an excellent camera especially for the price.
Great camera – but artifacts in bright sunlight
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Portability and use, all point and shoot – easy and classic Canon. Issue I have is with the artifacts in bright sunlight in video mode. It seems that the sensor calibration is such that, for example, when you are taking video at the pool and the sunlight reflects off the water, you get vertical artifacts at the points of reflection. The first camera I received was so bad, I had to return it for a second – which was not as bad, but still had the problem. That said, I decided to keep the camera because its other features were so useful. We’ve taken it to the beach and nothing beats being able to take it into the water (even with its issues) and then just washing off the sand. For its price point, a good, useful camera – but if you like to take a lot of video in bright sunlight, beware.
Worked as advertised in caves, ocean, jungle !!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Just got back from Cozumel Mexico. The camera was great. I went snorkeling, hiking in the Yucatan jungles, hiking in caves, swimming in underwater caves (yes – hike and swam 600 meters), and just plain sightseeing. The camera is no bigger than point-and-shoot film cameras of old. It was great. You don’t need the Canon accessory package (which I bought and didn’t use). The included wrist strap worked just fine. The picture quality was good. Definitely get an extra battery. I almost ran out (pretty close but didn’t) during the hike and swim in the underground caves but the battery survived the dozens of pictures and video (especially flash pictures and constant reviewing pictures while on this hike). The camera also survived a couple drops (one on a Mayan pyramid). It was also easy to operate while snorkeling. I was worried about leaks like other reviewers. I followed the instructions and everything went smoothly. Definitely worth every penny. It captured a once in a lifetime trip.
Problem with Glare off Water
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I recently purchased this camera for use on and in the water in Baja Mexico. I liked everything about this camera EXCEPT that many shots were rendered useless due to glare off the water surface. If you have any reflected sunlight off the water, this creates vertical “bars” across the image (both on the monitor and on the photo file). The camera manual hints at this problem (with no solution) but doesn’t reveal what a repeated and frustrating issue this is, especially for a camera designed to be used on the water! I believe a polarizing filter would fix the problem, but that’s not an option for this camera. I hope that Canon (a great company in general) will address this and hope this info is helpful in your purchasing decision.
love my photos
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this camera right before we went to Disney World as I didn’t want to chance taking my Rebel. I am so happy I chose to purchase this camera!!
I used it outside, inside, for fireworks, underwater, on water rides, at the aquarium and I have to say it performed past my expectations!!!!
The picture quality was great!
This camera also seems to be very durable. I will admit, I’ve already dropped it twice and the camera has had no issues, it still works perfectly!
I would highly recommend this camera to anyone!! But I would also suggest in getting an extra battery, especially if you are going to be using it all day.
Awesome camera with a few minor adjustments
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We bought this camera because A. It is the only one that can go down to 33′ of water without housing. Olympus can only go to 10′. B. It takes awesome land pictures as well, and C. the price was right. I love that its a 12.1 mega pixel and the auto display automatically picks the right scenic mode. Like if you were shooting a flower you don’t have to go to menu select “foliage” it automatically picks it. The shape could be an improvement. Its very bubbly and hard to hold at times. The speaker is on the bottom and thats where I rest my thumb to hold it. The volume can improve…when we play back videoes I can hardly hear it. The charger is compact and convenient to carry with you. Overall, this camera ROCKS!
Canon D10 – Great little underwater camera
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We purchased this camera about 3 weeks ago – just in time for our vacation to Hawaii. Now that we’ve had a chance to use it while snorkeling, we’ve found it to be everything we’d hoped for. The underwater photos are clear and bright. Previously we bought and used an Olympus underwater camera (the first maker of this class of camera) and found the photos dull and, due to shutter lag – often missed our subject. But this camera is very responsive and most photos look just like our view out of the face mask. We’re very happy with our choice and sure that you will be too.
Great all around camera

I brought this camera on my cruise vacation. It performed great. From candid shots to snorkeling. It was great.
Canon D10 review
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I just came back from a kayak trip and used the Canon D10 for scenic and underwater pictures. I purchased this camera for this very reason. It is an ideal camera for water sports and for backpacking. With these type of adventures, you are always exposed to water due to being on the river or in rain. The clarity of the pictures I took under water were excellent and the landscape pictures were excellent as well.
Great pics, Easy to Use
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Super easy to use, good pictures both in and out of the water. Liked having the video underwater as well. My 6 and 7 yr old nieces loved taking pictures and videos of each other under the water.
I wish the zoom was a bit more powerful. My old canon was 4x and this is 3x and I noticed the difference.
My camera was lost while on vacation, I took the opportunity to re-check the other underwater cameras and am coming back to get this one! We are snorkelers and the underwater capability is a big plus.
Camera has some issues
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Canon has done a good job of hyping up this camera. The truth is, it has failed to live up to its expectations. There are several problems with this camera, and a couple of them are serious issues.
Cons:
The biggest problem with this camera – it films video in .mov format. Which does not work with windows movie maker. So you either have to buy some video conversion software, or buy a new video editor. I called canon tech support and they said some software was included with the camera that can convert or edit the video. The problem is, the software crashes all the time. The software is so unstable its not usable – I am running windows XP service pack 2. I had to buy an after market program to convert the .MOV videos to .AVI so they can be edited in windows movie maker.
The very least canon could have done, is to test the software before they shipped it. As soon as the included program starts to edit or convert the .MOV video, the program locks up or crashes.
At 12 megapixel the pictures have a lot of noise in them. Its like they are grainy for some reason. The 12 megapixel pictures were bad enough that I set the camera to 8 megapixel – and those look better then the 12 megapixel.
The pictures are too bright – the automatic setting is nice, but the pictures come out too bight and do not look natural. In low light – instead of the camera switching to the flash, it adjust the brightness and makes the picture look strange.
The metal snap of the wrist band causes a lot of noise in the video. While you are filming a video, and moving around, the mic picks up the “tap, tap, tap” of the wrist band snap moving around.
No second hole in the base for a tri-pod. Which is not a big deal.
No cover for the lens. So when you take this camera to the beach, you better be careful around sand. If you get sand on the lens and whip it off, there is a chance you will scratch the lens.
Uses lithium battery instead of AA. For an outdoor camera, AA batteries would have been a better option then a lithium battery.
Pros:
Its water proof, it takes pictures, and films video.
Once the .MOV videos are converted to .AVI, they look really good.
